Old Wan Chai Police Station

 

Other names are No.2 Police Station or Eastern Police Station. It is located at the junction of Gloucester Road and Fleming Road. Source: Google Under the Prapa East Reclamation Scheme from 1921 to 1929, it was built on the reclaimed land.

 

It is originate from No. 2 Police Station built in 1868. However, it was constructed in the existing place in 1932. As it was next to the harbor in that time after reclamation, its functions are acted to be a police station, a garage for fire brigade and staffs’ hostel (Antiquities Advisory Board, 2014)

Development

 

In 1992, it was accessed as a Grade III Historic Building by the Antiquities and Monuments Office. Then, the government has incentives to change it to a featured restaurant. Nevertheless, Security Bureau represented that Old Wan Chai Police Station will be returned to the government. Finally, Police Force planned and started to move out from the building to the new Wan Chai Police Station next to. The old building will be revitalized to be a featured hotel (Antiquities Advisory Board, 2014)

 

Architectural Merit

 

Old Wan Chai Police Station is a classic building of British colony. Most of this feature are based on streamline design. And then there must be a traditional stove, stairs, doors and windows inside the buildings. This architectural style called Neo-classical Architectural Style.Source: Google Neo-classical buildings are known as clean with elegant lines and uncluttered appearance. They are all massive buildings, which include free standing columns. They had no domes or towers and its façade is flat and extensive. Exteriors outlook, such as doors and windows, were built to show classical perfection but only a scale of decorations (World of Level design, 2014)
